How and Why Wonder Books

 

How and Why Wonder Books were a series of illustrated American books published in the 1960s and 1970s that was designed to teach science and history to children and young teenagers. The series began in 1960, and was edited under the supervision of Dr. Paul E. Blackwood of the Office of Education at the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. The series was published by Wonder Books, Inc., a division of Grosset & Dunlap.

There were 74 unique titles in the series, each one starting with the phrase The How and Why Wonder Book of… as a key component of the book's name. All 74 volumes were published in a softcover format, with pages measuring 8½ × 11 inches (21.6 × 27.9 cm) in size. A number of the titles were also produced in hardcover versions, too; these being referred to as either the "Trade Editions" or the "Library Editions." Each How and Why Wonder Book uniformly contained a total of 48 pages, with the only exception being The Environment and You, which contained 64 pages.

The softcover books were numbered consecutively in series starting at 5001 (with the only exception being the final book in the series entitled Fossils).The hardcover versions were numbered differently from the softcover issues.

When publication of the How and Why Wonder Book series first commenced in 1960, only the initial six titles in the series were produced. As time went by, and as the series proved to be highly successful, more new titles were added to expand its scope.

I have some of these books that I was fascinated by while browsing among the old bookstores. Also these are not easy to find on the internet. However, there are only a few books that I have uploaded. I have soft copies of seventy of these books. I would like to give you the opportunity to read about twenty of them today

How and Why Wonder Books යනු 1960 සහ 1970 ගණන්වල ප්‍රකාශයට පත් කරන ලද ඇමරිකානු නිදර්ශන පොත් මාලාවක් වන අතර එය ළමයින්ට සහ යෞවන යෞවනියන්ට විද්‍යාව සහ ඉතිහාසය ඉගැන්වීමට නිර්මාණය කර ඇත. මෙම පොත්මාලාව 1960 දී ආරම්භ වූ අතර, එක්සත් ජනපද සෞඛ්‍ය, අධ්‍යාපන සහ සුභසාධන දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ අධ්‍යාපන කාර්යාලයේ ආචාර්ය පෝල් ඊ. බ්ලැක්වුඩ්ගේ අධීක්ෂණය යටතේ සංස්කරණය කරන ලදී. මෙම කතා මාලාව Grosset & Dunlap හි අංශයක් වන Wonder Books, Inc. විසින් ප්‍රකාශයට පත් කරන ලදී.

එහි අද්විතීය මාතෘකා 74 ක් තිබූ අතර, ඒ සෑම එකක ම පොතේ නමේ ප්‍රධාන අංගයක් ලෙස The How and Why Wonder Book of... යන වාක්‍ය ඛණ්ඩයෙන් ආරම්භ වේ. සියලුම වෙළුම්( 74 ) ප්‍රමාණයෙන් අඟල් 8½ × 11 (සෙ.මී. 21.6 × 27.9) ප්‍රමාණයේ පිටු සහිත මෘදු ආවරණ ආකෘතියකින් ප්‍රකාශයට පත් කරන ලදී. මාතෘකා ගණනාවක් දෘඪ ආවරණ ( hard cover) අනුවාදවලද නිෂ්පාදනය කරන ලදී; මේවා "වෙළඳ සංස්කරණ" හෝ "පුස්තකාල සංස්කරණ" ලෙසින් හඳුන්වනු ලැබේ. සෑම How and Why Wonder Book එකකම පිටු 48ක් අඩංගු වූ අතර, එකම ව්‍යතිරේකය වන The Environment and You, පිටු 64කින් සමන්විත විය.

මෘදු කවර පොත් 5001 න් ආරම්භ වන ශ්‍රේණිවල අනුපිළිවෙලින් අංකනය කරන ලදී (එකම ව්‍යතිරේකයක් මාලාවේ ෆොසිල නම් වූ ලිපි මාලාවේ අවසාන පොත වේ).  දෘඪ ආවරණ අනුවාද මෘදු ආවරණ ගැටළු වලට වඩා වෙනස් ලෙස අංකනය කර ඇත.

How and Why Wonder Book මාලාව ප්‍රථම වරට ප්‍රකාශයට පත් කිරීම 1960 දී ආරම්භ කරන විට,  මුල් මාතෘකා හය පමණක් නිෂ්පාදනය කරන ලදී. කාලය ගෙවී යත්ම,පොත් මාලාව ඉතා සාර්ථක බව ඔප්පු වූ විට, එහි විෂය පථය පුළුල් කිරීම සඳහා තවත් නව මාතෘකා එකතු කරන ලදී.

පරණ පොත් කඩ අතර සැරිසරද්දී මාගේ සිත්ගත් මෙම පොත් කිහිපයක් ම මා සතුව තිබෙනවා. ඒ වගේ ම අන්තර්ජාලයේ මේවා සොයාගැනීමට පහසු නැහැ. තිබුණත් ඇත්තේ මා විසින් උඩුගත කළ පොත් කිහිපය පමණයි. ඒ වගේ ම විදෙස් මිතුරකු මට ලබා දුන්  මේ පොත් හැත්තෑ ගණනක මෘදු පිටපත් තිබෙනවා. අද එයින් විස්සක් පමණ ඔබට කියැවීමට අවස්ාව ලබා දෙන්න මා කැමතියි.

LIHINI BOOKS - ළිහිණි පොත්

 I initially decided to publish the books on my blog but later I delayed it a bit. Because of the copyright issue on those books. But a few people asked me to look for old books that were hard to find and could not be reprinted. So I decided to publish a few such old books from time to time as time allowed.

Accordingly, I bring you today some of the books in the Lihini series of books published by Gunasena Publishers  about fifty to sixty years. 

Many of these books were given to me by Mr Chiran Windsor, who currently resides in Australia. He presents a large number of such old books through the Facebook group 'Home Librarians' Association'(ගෘහ පුස්තකාල හිමියන්ගේ සංගමය.) He also gave permission for the books to be published on my blog. During his recent visit to Sri Lanka, he distributed a large number of books in his possession free of charge. I also got some Lihini books there. Accordingly, the number of Lihini books I had increased. Similarly, I came across a collection of poems  (මියගිය කිරිල්ලි ) on the facebook page called Forgotten Pages(අමතක වුණු පිටු.) That book is also a book I have. The book that was published on that page is presented here without scanning it again. Also included are several other books found on the Internet.

මගේ බ්ලොග් අඩවියේ පොත් පළ කරන්නට මා මුල දී තීරණය කර තිබුණත් පසුව මා එය මඳකට ප්‍රමාද කළා. ඒ පොත්වල ප්‍රකාශන අයිතිය සම්බන්ධ ගැටලුව නිසායි. එහෙත් සොයාගැනීමට අපහසු නැවත මුද්‍රණය වේ යැයි සිතිය නොහැකි පැරණි පොත් සොයා දෙන මෙන් කිහිප දෙනෙකු මගෙන් ඉල්ලා සිටියා. ඒ නිසා ඉඩකඩ ලැබෙන පරිදි වරින් වර එවැනි පැරණි  පොත් කිහිපයක් පළ කරන්නට මා තීරණය කරා.

ඒ අනුව ගුණසේන සමාගම විසින් මෙයට වසර පනහකට හැටකට පමණ පෙර මුද්‍රණය කරන ලද ලිහිණි පොත් මාලාවේ පොත් කිහිපයක් අද ඔබ වෙත ගෙන එනවා. මේ පොත් බොහොමයක් මා වෙත ලබා දුන්නේ දැනට ඕස්ට්‍රේලියාවේ වෙසෙන Chiran Windsor මහත්මයා විසින්. 

එතුමා ගෘහ පුස්තකාල හිමියන්ගේ සංගමය නම් ෆේස්බුක් සමූහය හරහා මෙවැනි පැරණි පොත් විශාල ප්‍රමාණයක් ඉදිරිපත් කරනවා. එතුමා එම පොත් මාගේ බ්ලොග් අඩවියේ පළ කිරීමට ද අවසර ලබා දුන්නා. පසුගිය දා ලංකාවට පැමිණි අවස්ථාවක එතුමා සතුව තිබූ පොත් රාශියක් කැමති අයට නොමිලේ බෙදා දුන්නා. එහිදී ලිහිණි පොත් කිහිපයක් මට ද හිමි වුණා. ඒ අනුව මා සතුව තිබූ ලිහිණි පොත් ගණන ඉහළ ගියා. ඒ වගේ ම අමතක වුණු පිටු නම් මුහුණු පොත් පිටුවෙන් මියගිය කිරිල්ලි කවි සංග්‍රහය මට හමු වුණා. එම පොත ද මා සතුව තිබෙන පොතක්. එය නැවත ස්කෑන් නොකර එම පිටුවේ පළ කර තිබූ පොත එලෙසම මෙහි ඉදිරිපත් කරනවා.එසේ ම අන්තර්ජාලයෙන් හමු වූ තවත් පොත් කිහිපයක් ද මේ සමග එකතු කර ඇති.

ලිහිණි පොත් පිළිබඳ සිළුමිණ ඉරිදා පත්‍රෙය් පළ වූ රසවත් ලිපියක් ද මෙහි පළමුවෙන් ඉදිරිපත් කරනවා. (දිගුව)
